Junior League 2nd Round, Bramcote
25th June 2011
|
|
|
The second round of this
year’s Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Junior Swimming League saw our
youngest swimmers make the short journey down the A52 to Bramcote Leisure
centre where they put in a solid performance against some strong competition
to finish in third place. Phoenix took 6 first places and 11 second places
in the 47 event programme.
Star performer for
Phoenix was 11 year old Matthew Holt who took gold in both the 50m butterfly
and 50m breaststroke. In fact our 11 year olds proved to be the strongest
age group on the night with Georgia Creasey taking the girls 50m butterfly
and Joshua Beech the boys 50m freestyle. There was also a fine win for the
11 year old girls freestyle relay team of Fran Harrison, Leah Beale, Maddie
Taylor and Georgia Creasey. 9 year old Christopher Young was victorious in
the boys 25m freestyle.
We now enjoy a summer
break before the final round of this year’s league takes place in September
so time to recharge those batteries and be raring to go again! Very well
done to all involved and many thanks to all the poolside helpers and
officials.

The National Arena Swimming League 3rd Round, Market Drayton
12th December 2010
|
|
|
After the mammoth trip
to Hereford for the second round, the final round of this year’s National
Arena League was, blessedly, much nearer at Market Drayton. A good team
performance by our, all home grown, talent gave us a comfortable fourth
place finish which should see us safely back in Division 1 next year. There
were 9 first places and 3 second places taken by Derby Phoenix on the night.
Once again our open
ladies were the star performers winning six out of their seven events.
Sasha Wisdish started the evening off in fine fashion with a win for Phoenix
in the 4 x 50m individual medley and went on to take the 100m breaststroke.
Evie Keane was victorious in the 100m butterfly, 100m backstroke and 100m
freestyle. Sasha and Evie were then joined by Alex Davies and Laura Young
to take first place in the open medley relay. The girls along with Amy Ng
and Louise Stephenson were just pipped into second place in the 6 x 50m
freestyle relay. Richard Sellers yet again showed his quality with wins in
the open men’s 4 x 50m individual medley, 100m butterfly and 100m freestyle.
Laura Young was unfortunate not to at least share the win in the 15 year old
girls 100m butterfly, despite finishing in a dead heat and with an
absolutely identical time to the first placed Braunstone swimmer, Laura was
adjudged to have finished second by the line judge. There was also a second
place for Georgia Creasey in the 11 year old girls 50m backstroke.
We say it every round,
but the team spirit was, yet again, amazing! Doug was thoroughly impressed
with the vocal support from swimmers, helpers, parents and coaches
throughout the gala and particularly with the singing at the end! Perhaps
we ought to try for the X Factor next year – must be better than Wagner!!!
(Although might be a problem as the final tends to fall on the same night as
the National League Gala, so maybe not, we need you all swimming!) Well
done to everyone involved.

The National Arena Swimming League 2nd Round, Hereford Leisure Pool
13th
November 2010
|
|
|
The second round of this
year’s National Arena Swimming League saw Derby Phoenix make the long, long
journey to Hereford Leisure Pool. However, the swimmers didn’t let a long
coach trip dim their enthusiasm in the pool and put in some fine
performances to finish in second place to host club, Hereford taking 15
first places and eight second places in the 50 event programme.
The Open ladies were in
stunning form and stormed to victory in every single one of their events.
Evie Keane took three gold medals, in the 100m butterfly, 100m freestyle and
100m backstroke. Sasha Wisdish won the 200m Individual Medley and the 100m
breaststroke. There were also victories in the Medley Relay for Evie,
Sasha, Alex Davies and Laura Young and in the 6 x 50 freestyle relay for
Evie, Sasha, Alex, Laura, Amy Ng and Louise Stephenson. Richard Sellers
once again had a great night, taking the men’s open 200m Individual Medley,
100m butterfly and 100m freestyle. There were also some good wins for the 15
year olds. Laura Young took first place in the 100m butterfly whilst for
the lads, Harry Webster won both the 100m backstroke and 100m breaststroke
and Stephen Wyatt was victorious in the 100m butterfly. Harry and Stephen
were joined by Simon Taylor and Mark Wright to take first place in the
Medley relay.
Once again the Phoenix
team spirit was excellent - if there was an event for that, we would
certainly have taken all six points! Thanks to all the swimmers, helpers,
coaches and parents who gave up so much of their Saturday to support the
club both in and out of the water. We must all now keep everything crossed
that Round 3 (the night before the County Sprints) sees us drawn to swim in
a pool much closer to home – Queen Street would be nice!!

The National Arena Swimming League 1st Round, Stechford Cascades
9th
October 2010
|
|
|
The first round of this
year’s National Arena Swimming League saw Derby Phoenix travel to Stechford
Cascades for a tough first round draw which included last year’s run away
winners, Boldmere. Phoenix came away with 5th place on the
night, a good result when you consider that all the teams we were up against
finished higher than us in the league last year.
Richard Sellers was once
again our star performer taking gold in the Open men’s 200m Individual
Medley, the 100m butterfly and the 100m freestyle. Evie Keane took the open
100m butterfly and was just pipped into second position in both the open
100m freestyle and the open 100m backstroke. Harry Webster won the 15 year
old 100m backstroke and took second place in the 15 year old 100m
breaststroke. There was also a second place for Louise Stephenson in the 13
year old 100m backstroke.
There was a great team
atmosphere and some excellent swims, you all just kept on swimming and did
your bit to ensure that we came away with pride intact and, at least, with
bragging rights over our near neighbours, Mansfield. A big thank you and
well done to all our swimmers, especially the one or two who gave up their
whole evening just to swim in one event for us. You are all stars!
We now look forward to

Whiting Trophy Gala, Mansfield
25th
September 2010
|
|
|
The third weekend of the
new season saw Derby Phoenix take second place in our first A grade
competition of the season at The Whiting Trophy Gala, hosted by Mansfield SC
at The Beechdale Leisure Centre, Nottingham. The programme followed the
format of the National League galas, the first of which is coming up in a
couple of week’s time, so is a good pointer for that. To finish second on
the night to Nottingham Leander, the strongest club in Nottinghamshire, was
a great result for us and certainly no disgrace!
We took just four first
places: Laura Young was victorious in the 15 year old 100m backstroke
whilst Harry Webster took the 15 year old 100 metres breaststroke. Richard
Sellers took gold in the 100m Open butterfly and Robert Guest won the 100m
Open freestyle. However, there were a fantastic 17 second places awarded to
Phoenix swimmers which ultimately secured an overall second place finish on
the podium for us against some strong teams.
Chief Coach Doug Whitlam
was extremely pleased with the final result and commented:
“There were some
exceptional swims throughout the age groups all the way to our open
swimmers. Well done to you all” He also urged that swimmers all now focus
on their training to ensure the best possible results for the rest of the
year.

Bourchier Shield Trophy Gala, Uttoxeter
18th
September 2010
|
|
|
The
second weekend of the new season saw Derby Phoenix in action again, this
time at the Bourchier Shield Trophy Gala hosted by Dove Valley at Uttoxeter.
This was again a B grade gala with cut off times and ‘speeding tickets’ for
those exceeding these times.
There
were some terrific swims from Derby Phoenix swimmers with no less than 15
speeding tickets being issued to our team, indicating lots of pb’s. So very
well done to those swimmers that were issued with tickets: India Holmes
(9), Christopher Young(9), Sam Rayner (12), Craig Baxter(14), Matthew Rayner
(9), Eleanor May (11)(twice), Ben Smith(14), Joseph Doherty(12), Lucy Stokes
(10), Josh Beech (10), Aston Waddingham (11), Sean Bird (12)and Rebekah
Miller (12). Along with our young 9 year old mixed freestyle relay team of
Lucy Cummings, Christopher Young, India Holmes and Matthew Rayner who were
also just too fast on the night!
In
spite of the many points lost by our speedy swimmers, we still finished in
second place taking 16 first places in the 52 event programme. For the 9
year olds there were gold medals for Lucy Cummings in the 25m butterfly,
Amba King, 25m backstroke and Christopher Young, 25m backstroke. The 10 year
olds also won their fair share of first places with Harvey Waddingham taking
the 25m breaststroke, Lucy Stokes the 25m backstroke and Matthew Rayner the
boy’s 25m backstroke. There was also a win for the 10 year old mixed
freestyle relay team of Danni Jackson, Harvey Waddingham, Leah Beal and Josh
Beech. There was victory for the 11 year olds with Amelia Goodman taking the
honours in 50m breaststroke, and both the boys and girls 50m backstroke
going to Phoenix with Aston Waddingham and Eleanor May each winning their
respective race. The 11 year old mixed Medley relay team of Andrew Young,
Amelia Goodman, Aston Waddingham and Eleanor May also took pride of place on
the podium. Joseph Doherty did his bit for the 12 year olds, taking gold in
the 50m butterfly. Wins for the 14 year olds came from Amy Ng in the 50m
breaststroke and Fiona Lakin in the 50m freestyle. The mixed 14 year old
Medley relay team of Ben Smith, Craig Baxter, Amy Ng and Fiona Lakin were
also victorious. Finally there was a good win for Phoenix in the first of
the two canon relays.
Another good night on the road for Phoenix with many of our swimmers
exceeding their coach’s expectations – well done to all those that swam and
a big thank you to all the helpers.

Matlock Gala
11th
September 2010
|
|
|
The first gala of the new season saw Derby
Phoenix take first place at Matlock in a B Grade Gala. Graded galas have cut
off times and swimmers swimming faster than those times are given a
‘speeding ticket’. Those swimming the fastest within the allowed time are
then awarded first place. Whilst on the night it seemed like we were getting
lots of 3rd and 4th places, in effect our swimmers were often taking first
place and maximum points as there were many ‘over standard’ swims.
Congratulations should go to those Phoenix
swimmers taking speeding tickets, you obviously swam a much better time than
expected! They were: Craig Baxter, Amber King, Ben Smith, Amelia Goodman,
Matthew Rayner, Alexandra Ballard, Emily Cannon, Lucy Cummings, Oliver
Purgavie and the 13 year old freestyle relay team comprising Sam Bailey,
Craig Baxter, Oliver Purgavie and Jed Williams.
Phoenix took 14 first places in the 49 event
programme. For the 9 year olds Matthew Creasey was victorious in the 1
length freestyle whilst Chris Young took the 9 year old 1 length backstroke.
The 9 year old girls freestyle relay team of India Holmes, Lucy Cummings,
Clare Henley and Amber King also took gold. Oliver King was first in the 11
year old 1 length freestyle and the 11 year old girl’s freestyle team of
Emily Cannon, Katy Phelps, Emily Harrison and Amelia Goodman won their race.
There was just one win for the 13 year olds with Fiona Lakin taking honours
in the 100m freestyle.
The 15 year olds were in fine form, winning
all their relays. Craig Baxter, Alistair Noon, Oliver Purgavie and Ben Smith
took the free style relay whilst Craig Alistair and Ben were helped to
victory in the medley relay by Sam Bailey. The girl’s team weren’t going to
be out done and Charlotte Miller, Ella Harrison, Sophie Cutts and Amy Ng
were victorious in the freestyle relay with Charlotte, Amy and Sophie being
joined by Katy Phelps to take gold in the medley relay. Amy Ng was a double
winner taking both the 100m butterfly and the 100m freestyle for the 15 year
old girls. Craig Baxter took the 100m freestyle for the boys. To round off a
very successful evening for the team there was victory in the Canon relay.

This was a tough competition in full
Branch/Regional/Nationals format against teams who are renowned for their
competition record - and we are now up there beating them!
Danni and Georgia won Gold in the U11 by a comfortable margin, with Katy and
Claudia gaining a good Bronze in the U13, and only missing Silver by one
point!
What was great to see was that all of the Phoenixes performed well across
all of the events. What's more, they appeared to enjoy themselves and
behaved very well in the process.
Your achievement is made more impressive given that we're only a year old,
and have limited training time. There's still some room for improvement but
we are certainly getting there quickly.
Before the competition, the Branch organisers commented how pleased they
were that Phoenix were able to attend. It was clear during the competition
that they were impressed with your achievements too.
Thanks as ever need to go to you, the swimmers and parents. Please join me
also in saying a big thank you to your coaches. It's not always easy for 5
teenagers to forfeit their Saturday lie-in, and also their own training in
order to help teach others. Achievements like this are certainly a great way
to say 'thanks'.

Cheadle
Swimming Club Gala
21st
February 2009
|
|
|
Our
first trip to Cheadle this season saw Derby Phoenix fielding two teams of
swimmers in this age on day gala for 10, 12, 14 and Open age groups. This
was a closely fought competition which was not decided until to the last
race!
Derby
Phoenix Green took 19 first places and 15 second places in the 51 event
programme. There were also 2 wins and 5 second places for Derby Phoenix
Yellow.
For the
12 year olds, Craig Baxter was first in the Breaststroke and Jake Wesselingh
won the freestyle. The boys were joined by Oliver Purgavie and Thomas Watson
to win both of their relay races.
It was
a clean sweep for the 14 years old boys with individual wins for Ben Jackson
in the Butterfly, Sean Wesselingh in the Freestyle, Ryan Wesselingh in the
Backstroke and Matthew Gregory in the Breaststroke. The boys also won both
of their relay races.
It was
almost a clean sweep for the 14 year old girls too, with wins for Laura
Young in the Butterfly, Alex Davies in the Freestyle and Evie Keane in the
Backstroke. Along with Ella Graham the girls also won both of their relay
races.
For the
Phoenix Green Open swimmers there were individual wins for Rachel Jones in
the Backstroke and Alex Fish won the Freestyle for the boys. Alex, along
with Gye Whitlam, Adam Cutts and Darren Hodgett also won the Open Medley
relay.
The
Open boy swimmers were having their own competition and James Shand of
Phoenix Yellow triumphed to win the Backstroke and, with the help of Scott
Tovell-Coleman, Zak Hurt and Alex Fish, the Open Freestyle relay.
The
penultimate race saw a win for the Phoenix Green boys, Joseph Doherty, Sean
Bird, Craig Baxter, Jake, Sean and Ryan Wesselingh, Alex Fish and Gye
Whitlam in the Canon. This left us one point clear of the Cheadle A Team!
In the
final mixed Canon race the Cheadle A Team was just too strong and led most
of the way. Phoenix Green finished a close second which meant the
competition was tied
Well done to all the helpers - it was no easy task getting all those relay
swimmers into place and to the swimmers who all made this a very exciting
night!

Leeds Classic Lifesaving, John Charles Centre Leeds
17th
January 2009
|
|
|
Three teams from Derby Phoenix Lifesaving took
part in their first ever competition in full House colours wearing the
Phoenix hats with pride.
In the 15–17 age group category, Phoenix Ice comprising Alex Phelps, Natasha
Lawrence, Diane Woods and Hannah Ellis took part in both the Incident and
Speed sections of the Leeds Classic Lifesaving competition at the John
Charles Centre for Sport, competing against teams from across the UK,
including Blythe in the North East to Rochester in Kent. The four intrepid
adventurers were last out in the Incident section which meant a nervous hour
locked away in isolation awaiting their turn to complete in front of a crowd
of around 200 people. The Incident comprised of a number of casualties that
all needed rescuing because “a party by a lake had all gone wrong”. On the
side there was a girl who had cut her arm on a glass bottle, an unconscious
casualty that required being put into the recovery position and a non
breathing manikin that required CPR, all this was left for Hannah and Alex
to tackle while Diane and Tasha rescued everyone from the water. There were
about 7 people in the water, 2 were accessible from the side by using a safe
reach rescue, however the others needed to be rescued by somebody going to
fetch them. Tasha entered the water and headed straight for a giant blow up
crocodile, which she made all the casualties hold on to, she then towed them
all to the side. Diane assisted Tasha and then when all the people were
safely on the side she went to check for any submerged manikins. She found
one but she had just reached the side when they blew the whistle for the end
of the three minute incident.
Overall the incident required a number of separate rescue techniques and
casualty identification and priority along with aftercare requirements to a
total of eleven casualties. The team performed very well by all accounts (
I missed it because of regular training at Derby which went down well!) and
Hannah received a number of compliments on the strength and clarity of the
captaincy helping Tash, Alex and Diane to calm their nerves and complete
well, achieving a 7th position out of 10 teams taking part. The
Incident section was won by a team from Blythe Lifeguard and Swimming Club
from the North East.
In the Speed section Phoenix again completed in the 15 – 17 age group
category with Phoenix Fire, Simon, Jake, Claudia and Lauren and Phoenix
Flame, Stephen, Charlotte, Harry and Annie taking part in the very
competitive 12 – 14 age group against a total of 16 clubs.
The events comprised the following:
1. Rescue Tow Relay: Each team member swims a 50m length towing
each other using a torpedo rescue tube.
2 Rescue Medley Relay: 1 length each of front crawl, front crawl
with fins swim with torpedo buoy, 1 length tow with fins and torpedo.
3. Manekin Relay: 25m each towing a full/half dull manekin.
4. Rope Throw Relay: Each member takes turn to throw out the rope
and rescue a team member inside 2-minute maximum.
All the teams showed great promise, with a number of heat wins and the
following positions achieved in the final standings.

One of the highlights of the day was to hear the announcer on heat one of
the “Leeds Classic Challenge”, where all four swimmers complete 1 width of
breast stroke legs whilst holding onto each other then reverse with a “chin
tow” technique commented “Derby Phoenix appear to have this heat well and
truly wrapped up”.
So, our first competition came to an end, no medals to bring home this time
but all the teams showed great promised and with a little more work on
technique it won’t be long until we are seriously pushing for some
silverware. A very weary, but happy, squad headed South on the M1, hopefully
looking forward to our next outing for the RLSS speed nationals at the end
of February.
A big thank-you to everyone that took part and helped in any way, including
transport to and from Leeds, training on a Saturday, administration, web
site etc, and an especially big thank-you to Louise Wells and her team at
Leeds Lifesaving for putting on a great competition.

National League 3rd Round, Leamington Spa
13th
December 2008
|
|
|
Our final round in this
year’s National League galas saw Derby Phoenix in action at Royal Leamington
Spa.
A great team performance
resulted in 11 first places and 13 second places for the team in the 50
event gala, which left us comfortably in second place on the night. This
should mean that we finish in 8th position overall in Division 1,
a very healthy position for a club of our size.
There were wins on the
night for 13 year olds Laura Young in the 100m butterfly and Matthew Gregory
in the 100m breaststroke. Matthew was joined by Simon Taylor, Stephen Wyatt
and Jake Wesselingh and together the boys claimed victory in the 4 x 50m
Freestyle Relay.
Our 15 year olds were in
fine form with Evie Keane taking the 100m backstroke and 100m freestyle
whilst Ella Graham was victorious in the 100m breaststroke(both girls
swimming up a year). The girls were joined by Ellie Taylor and Sasha
Wisdish to take gold in the girls 4 x 50m Medley relay. Robert Guest was a
winner for the lads in the 100m Freestyle.
Richard Sellers continued
his awesome run, winning the 200m Individual Medley, the 100m butterfly and
the 100m freestyle for the open men. He remains unbeaten in any individual
event in this year’s competition.
All in all another good
night for the club and a big thank you to all swimmers who turned out even
though it did mean missing the X Factor final! Luckily by virtue of modern
day technology we were kept updated with results as they happened on the
long journey back!

National League 2nd Round, Stetchford Cascades
8th November 2008
|
|
|
Derby Phoenix were back at
Stechford Cascades for the second round of this year’s National Swimming
League. Our ‘reward’ for performing so well in the first round was a very
tough draw that saw us having to compete against both City of Coventry and a
very strong Boldmere team.
Phoenix battled away
however to take four 1st, three 2nd and eleven 3rd
places In the 50 event programme and to finally finish in fourth position.
Richard Sellers was again
our star performer, taking three first places in the Open 200m individual
medley, 100m butterfly and 100m freestyle. Robert Guest also took gold for
Phoenix in the 15 year olds 100m breaststroke.
The open men’s team of
James Shand, Glen Fowell, Richard Sellers and Alex Fish were initially
disqualified in the open 4 x 50 m medley relay but were later re-instated
and given 2nd place when it was realised that the referee had
confused the 5m flag for a 15m flag! The open men also took second place in
the last event of the evening, the 6 x 50m freestyle relay, with Robert
Guest, Alex Fish, Gye Whitlam, Glen Fowell, Adam Cutts and Richard Sellers
involved. There was also a silver for Sasha Wisdish in the 15 year olds
100m breaststroke event.
Our air horns obviously
bring good luck to all that use them. After being confiscated from the
Phoenix swimmers they somehow ended up in host team Boldmere’s possession
and were used to celebrate their many great swims which even saw them
overcome City of Coventry to take first place on the night. Well done
Boldmere but you might have left us some gas in our horns for the last
round!!!!

National League 1st Round, Stetchford Cascades
11th October 2008
|
|
|
The first round in this
year’s National League Gala, West Midlands Division 1 saw Derby Phoenix
travelling to Stechford Cascades and putting in a magnificent team
performance to finish in first (Yes first!) place.
In the 50 event programme
Phoenix took no less than 11 first and 13 second places.
Our star performer of the
evening had to be Richard Sellers who had travelled back from Bath
University to swim for his home club. What a great night he had –
taking first in the open men’s 4 x 50m Individual medley, 100m Butterfly and
100m Freestyle and just to round the evening off in style he achieved a
stunning 23.06 seconds for his 50m freestyle leg in the open men’s 6 x 50m
Freestyle relay event.
Whilst Richard led the way,
there were some great swims right across the board. For the 11 year
olds, Louise Stephenson won the 50m freestyle and was helped into first
place in the girls Medley relay by Annabelle Hough, Lara Wisdish and Katie
Phelps.
Matthew Gregory was a
double gold winner for the 13 year old lads taking both the 100m
breaststroke and 100m backstroke.
Not to be outdone, the 15
year olds put in some fine performances with Evie Keane winning the 100m
backstroke and Ella Graham taking the 100m breaststroke (both girls swimming
up a year!)
Robert Guest was victorious
in the 100m Freestyle for the lads.
Although only 14 years old,
Sasha Wisdish put in a wonderful effort to take gold in the ladies open 100m
breaststroke.
The fantastic team spirit
along with the air horns, clappers, blowers, voices and superb supporters
undoubtedly helped the team to achieve some great swims and times against
strong opposition resulting in a deserved victory for all those taking part.
We now look forward to round two.

National
League 2nd Round,
Stetchford
Cascades
10th November 2007
|
|
|
There was an excellent atmosphere at
Stetchford Cascades for the second round of the West Midlands National League
Division 1 gala. With both City of Derby and Derby Phoenix competing it was
always going to be a noisy night and so it proved to be!
As the evening progressed the gala almost
became two different competitions. A strong City of Derby team led from the
outset and became something of an irrelevance to the other teams as Phoenix
and Boldmere went into battle for second position with Chase, Shrewsbury and
Worcester all strongly contesting 4thplace.
There were some great performances for
Phoenix resulting in eight wins in the 50 event gala. Richard Sellers
taking the Open Men’s 4 x 50m individual medley and the Open Men’s 100m
butterfly. Ellie Taylor took gold in the 15 year olds 100m breaststroke.
For the 13 year olds, there were wins for Evie Keane and Ryan Wesselingh in
their respective individual 100m backstroke events. Evie along with Ella
Graham, Sasha Wisdish and Laura Young then took the 13 year olds Medley
Relay whilst Ryan was helped to victory in both the 13 year old Medley and
Freestyle Relays by Sam Bunting, Matt Gregory and Sean Wesselingh.
Phoenix and Boldmere were neck and neck
throughout the evening and by the time we reached the final event, the men’s
open 6x50m freestyle relay it was impossible for those on poolside to know
how the points total stood. The atmosphere for the last race was electric
with everybody in the building (or so it seemed!) shouting their team on.
Phoenix finished this race in third position with Boldmere coming in sixth.
Unfortunately this wasn’t going to prove to be enough as Boldmere took
second place on the night by just two points.
The team spirit shown by Derby Phoenix
however was outstanding with every Derby Phoenix swimmer in every race being
loudly encouraged on and the singing certainly outperforming all the other
teams. A great night! Bring on round 3!

Notts and Derby Junior League 2nd
Round, Hucknall
20th May 2007
|
|
|
The second round of this
years’ Notts and Derby Junior League saw Derby Phoenix involved in another
very closely fought competition. Although Chesterfield were clear winners
there were just two points separating second, third and fourth places. This
time however, Phoenix did enough to take second place in the gala held at
Hucknall.
Phoenix took 9 first places
and 11 second places in the 41 event programme.
There was a double win for
Phoenix swimmer Matthew Gregory who took the 50m breaststroke and the 50m
backstroke for the 12 year old boys. Matthew was joined by Harry Hough,

Ashbourne Frank Wright Trophy Gala
12th May 2007
|
|
|
Derby Phoenix put in an
excellent performance to earn a comfortable victory at this friendly gala
hosted by Ashbourne Swimming Club.
In the 44 event programme
Phoenix took no less than twenty two firsts and fourteen second places.
For the ten year olds,
Louise Stephenson was victorious in the 50m freestyle and there were first
places for Amy Ng in the 50m backstroke and Eleanor Spare in the 50m
breaststroke. Craig Baxter took honours in the 50m breaststroke. There were
wins for the 10 year olds in both the mixed freestyle relay and the mixed
medley relay.
The 12 year old boys were
in good form with Ryan Wesselingh, a double winner, taking the 12 year olds
50m breaststroke and 50m backstroke whilst brother, Sean was first in the
50m butterfly. Again there were wins in both the mixed freestyle relay and
the mixed medley relay.
Swimming for the 14 year
olds, there were victories for Rachel Jones in the 50m backstroke and
Victoria Hardy in the 50m breaststroke. There was also a win for the 14
year old mixed freestyle relay team.
In the open section there
were firsts for Joanne Reeks in the 50m butterfly, Sarah Keaney in the 50m
backstroke, Glen Fowell in the 50m freestyle and Darren Hodgett was a double
winner taking the 50m butterfly and 50m breaststroke. The open swimmers also
took both the medley and the freestyle relays.
There was a slight moment
of panic for the final event of the night, the canon relay, when it was
realized that the last Phoenix swimmer had gone AWOL. (Mentioning no names
Darren!) Fortunately he reappeared as the penultimate swimmer took to the
water, managed to scramble on his goggles and go on to win the race for us
so no harm done – except for a few more grey hairs for the poolside helpers
and coaches!
All in all another great
evening for Derby Phoenix.

Fielding a depleted team
due to half term holidays and illness which meant a record 18 invited
swimmers were unable to compete we turned up at Matlock with 22 swimmers,
instead of the normal 32, even after some last minute replacements. This
meant that half of them had to swim 6 times to cover all the relays.
Overall we finished a
surprising second behind Ripley.
Double winners on the night
were Craig Baxter boys 12yrs 100 Breaststroke and Butterfly and Daisy Bowen
girls 12yrs 100 Freestyle and Backstroke. There were also wins for Alex
Davies girls 14yrs 100 Fly, Natalie Hardy girls 14yrs 100 Breaststroke and

Derby Phoenix’s first
outing of the New Year saw them take the Whitby Trophy in fine style at a
gala aimed at 9, 10, 11 and 12 year olds hosted by Cheadle Swimming Club at

with Michael Horsley taking the butterfly The girls relay team of Lauren

West Midlands
League 3rd Round, Coventry
9th December 2006
|
|
|
Derby Phoenix put in another magnificent performance in the final of
the West Midlands National League, Division 1. Phoenix
went to the final, held in Coventry, ranked
sixth but finished the evening in third place behind City of Coventry and Perry
Beeches. This is the highest ever finish for Phoenix in the first division.
In the 50 event programme Phoenix
took 8 first places and 9 second places.
The 13 year old girls had a great night with Ellie Taylor taking the 100m
Butterfly and Evie Keane the 100m Backstroke. Ellie and Evie then
teamed up with Sarah Wise and Sasha Wisdish to take both the freestyle and
medley relays.
For the 15 year olds, there were wins for Joanne Reeks in the 100m
Butterfly and Darren Hodgett in the 100m Breaststroke.
Joe Keane was a double winner on the night taking both the Open Men’s
100m Backstroke and Freestyle.
Chief Coach Doug Whitlam was delighted with the result and commented:
“This result is down to a tremendous effort from the whole team on the
night, as each and every swimmer stepped up to the mark. Team spirit along
with support from non swimming team members and supporters who travelled
with us on the night was vital. Typical of the commitment shown were Alex
Fish, Adam Fulford and Gye Whitlam who each gave up their Saturday evening
to take part in one event, the Open Men’s 6 x 50m relay, having to wait
until the very last event of the evening for their swim”
Derby Phoenix now have to wait to see whether the team swam fast
enough to be ranked as one of the top 20 teams to compete at the National
finals in April at Ponds Forge.

Midlands League 2nd Round, Mansfield
11th
November 2006

Derby Phoenix put in a tremendous performance in the second round of
the West Midlands National League at Watermeadows Mansfield and finished a
very creditable second to Perry Beeches A.
In the 50 event programme Phoenix
took 12 first places and 8 second places.
The open men’s team proved to be virtually unbeatable with Richard
Sellers winning both the 4 x 25m Individual Medley and the 100m Butterfly,
Oliver Froud the 100m Backstroke and Joe Keane the 100m Freestyle.
Together with Darren Hodgett they also took honours in the 4 x 50m Open
Medley Relay. Alex Fish and Gye Whitlam then joined in the action to
help the lads to gold in the final event of the night, the 6 x 50m Open
Freestyle Relay.
There were double wins for 13 year old Ellie Taylor and 15 year old
Darren Hodgett in their respective 100m Breaststroke and 100m
Butterfly races.
Bringing home gold for the 11 year olds were Laura Young in the 50m
Butterfly and Matthew Gregory in the 50m Backstroke.
This result sees Phoenix into the final for the second time since
winning promotion to Division 1 just three years ago (having missed out on

West
Midlands League 1st Round, Coventry
14th October
2006
|
|
|
Derby Phoenix took 3rd place in the first round of the
West Midlands National League held at the 50m Coventry Pool with the smallest
possible margin of half a point separating us from Nuneaton and Bedworth
who just beat us into 2nd place.
There were some great performances by Phoenix Swimmers against tough
opposition and we came away having taken 12 first places and 8 second
places in the 50 event programme.
For the 11 year olds, Laura Young took gold in the 50m Butterfly.
The 13 year old girls put in an excellent performance winning 3
individual races and both relays. Evie Keane taking the 100m
Backstroke and 100m Freestyle. Ellie Taylor won the100m Butterfly and came
second in the 100m Breaststroke. Evie and Ellie were joined by Sarah Wise
and Sasha Wisdish and together the girls comfortably won both relay events.
Darren Hodgett took honours for the 15 year olds taking gold in both
the 100m Butterfly and the 100m Breaststroke.
In the Open Section Joe Keane won the 100m Freestyle, Richard Sellers
the 100m Butterfly and Oliver Froud the 100m Backstroke. Together
with Darren Hodgett who swam up, the lads also won the 4 x 50m Open Medley
Relay.
It was an exciting evening and although Leicester Penguins were quite
comfortable winners things really couldn’t have been any closer for second
place at the end. The result highlights how important every single
point is at this level. So swimmers get those fingernails growing,
round 2 is coming up shortly and a good result could see us make the final!

Whiting
Trophy Gala, Mansfield
30th
September 2006
|
|
|
Derby Phoenix were in action yet again at the weekend, this time
competing in The Whiting Trophy Gala hosted by Mansfield Swimming
Club. Phoenix
finished 4th in this very closely fought competition that ended
with just twelve points separating the top 4 teams.
Phoenix
took 12 first places and 6 second places in the 50 event programme. The
wins were very evenly spread with each age group, 11’s, 13’s, 15’s and Open
achieving three first places.
For the 11 year olds Matthew Gregory took the honours in the 50m
backstroke and 50m breaststroke. Matthew was joined by Robert
Collins, Stephen Wyatt and Harry Hough and together the boys came first in
the 11 year old Medley Relay.
Evie Keane was a triple winner for the 13 year olds. She won
the 50m backstroke, 50m butterfly and 100m freestyle.
Darren Hodgett was a double winner for the 15 year olds taking the
100m backstroke and 50m butterfly. There was also a win for the girls
medley relay team of Sarah Keaney, Ellie Barlow, Joanne Reeks and Emily
Pratt.
Richard Sellers helped the open swimmers to their three wins by
taking the 4 x 1 length Individual Medley, 100m butterfly and 100m
freestyle.
But for three disqualifications, Phoenix would have been right up there
with the winners and this all bodes well for the National League in a
fortnight’s time.
A special mention must go to Sophie Cutts. Sophie came along to
the gala to cheer on brother Adam but was called into action when the 11
year old girls team found itself a swimmer down. With less than 5
minutes to go before their first relay event, Sophie donned borrowed
costume, hat and goggles and without time for even a warm-up helped the 11
year olds to 6 valuable points in their two relay events. Sophie you are a
star!

Well what can I say?
After the previous
evenings sterling efforts at Coventry
most of us got home and to bed for 11pm to be up and on the poolside the
next morning for a 9am warm up which meant for many a 7am get up at the
latest.
We came away from
Ponds Forge as top club winning both top male and top female category,
first time in the clubs history. There were 48 medalists across all
age groups and in the 8 Open competitions we had 24 finalists, 15 male and
9 female winning 4 out of the 8 championship titles.
Race of the day was
I suppose the first men’s final, the 100m freestyle, with the three Derby
Phoenix lads – Joseph Keane, Oliver Froud and Richard Sellers battling down
the final length with City of Derby’s Jamie Broom all well clear of the
rest of the field and Joe winning the tussle and the other 3 within a
couple of tenths of a second of one another.
As a coach the men’s
100m backstroke was the most satisfying, fielding 5 out of the 10 finalists
not only did we get a 1, 2 we also had the fastest 12 year old James Shand,
14 year old Darren Hodgett, 15 year old Oliver Froud, 16 year old Joseph
Keane and 17 year old Richard Sellers. Missed out on the 13 year category,
must do better!
For battling spirit my vote goes to Eleanor
Barlow in the women’s 100 breaststroke final, turning in third place at
halfway she stormed down the final 50m to win on the touch, great stuff.

National League 2nd Round, Coventry
12th
November 2005
|
|
|
A very tough second round draw had us
competing against City of Coventry A and B
teams, City of Derby A, Stourbridge A and
Luton A at Coventry’s
50m pool. Never outclassed and always in the competition we finished a
close third behind City of Derby with Coventry A winning by
a clear margin. Team spirit played a major part in all our races with
tremendous support from the team and parents alike urging every swimmer on
to their best.
Special mention must
go to our 11 year old girls who won 4 out of their 6 events with both
relays won by a significant margin, so well done to Evie Keane, Sasha
Wisdish, Laura Young, Alex Davies and Katie Selfe.
So bring on the
final round in December.

Firstly I would like
to recognize the superb organization for this year’s championship, being
able to be a spectator this time it seemed to run smoothly and quickly with
the minimum of delay. Congratulations also to our electronic timekeeping
heroes who stuck with it until they resolved the problems and got it working,
well done to Andy Stoll and Ian Cotter.
The end result was
an extremely high standard event with 32 championship records being broken
all the way through from the youngest age group, 8/under, through to Open.
In addition in 10 of those events 2nd and in some cases 3rd
place swimmers were also inside the old record. The previous highest number
of records broken was 26 in 2004.
To give some measure as to the standard on
the night 9 swimmers achieved 21 Midland
district times and 5 National times.
