The method of qualifying for progression is changing to 100 IM for D squad and 200 IM for C & B squads because the times need a review, and some swimmers have made a focus on one stroke as their primary training stroke too early. Many children who are very proficient at one stroke often become better at another stroke as they age. Therefore, swimmers should train on all four strokes from a young age and as they get older, continue to develop skills and technique in the four strokes. That was the intention of the aggregated time on the 50m swims. However, some swimmer's attention has become more on a favourite or choice stroke preferring not to give time for the development of the other strokes.

An individual-medley based training programme has many benefits, developing the technique of all four competitive strokes. Furthermore, the changing of the strokes and tempo, during the individual-medley training develop a swimmer's aerobic capacity and general conditioning. Also, it enables a swimmer to practise all the turns needed and work on weaker strokes. Swimmers will have more opportunity to enter the 200 IM at Open Meets versus the 400 Freestyle thus this event can provide coaches, swimmers and their parents with a good gauge of improvement across all four swimming strokes over time.
