Like learning to read, write or even ride a bicycle, swimming is an invaluable life skill. In addition to being a great form of low impact exercise, its great for confidence and good fun too.

With a heritage of developing highly competitive swimmers, Derby Phoenix Swimming Club know a thing or two about teaching children how to swim!

CAN ANYONE LEARN?

Our teaching team provide a range of swimming lessons for youngsters of all abilities; from those who can't swim at all, to those who maybe have been to lessons elsewhere but need to get better.

HOW WILL MY CHILD LEARN?

Our teaching sessions are structured using the National Plan For Teaching Swimming (NPTS) that is issued by the Amateur Swimming Association. As swimmers become more proficient, they progress through the various levels. At each level, the swimmer’s level of ability is assessed, and when the required standard is achieved, a nationally recognised certificate and attractive badge is awarded. Places are available for non-swimmers and improvers.

WHO WILL TEACH MY CHILD?

Derby Phoenix Swimming Club only use highly qualified and experienced instructors. All of our instructors have qualifications in swimming tuition and life saving techniques, and importantly enjoy working with children.

WHERE DO I NEED TO GO?

The teaching section uses local swimming pools in the Derby area. All teaching sessions normally last 30 minutes and the course duration is 10 weeks. You can find full details of the times, pools and directions here.

WHAT EQUIPMENT WILL MY CHILD NEED?

The main things that your child will need when learning to swim with us is lots of energy and the ability to listen carefully!

Any sensible costume for girls and trunks for buys is fine, and a fairly descent pair of goggles is highly recommended. We provide other equipment such as floats to begin with. As your child progresses through the various groups and maybe on into the main club sections, you may want to consider buying a float and other items. Our swimshop stocks a range of goggles, costumes and other items which we have carefully selected as being suitable for club use. You can visit our swimshop online here.

CAN I STAY WITH MY CHILD?

Parents are always welcome at our teaching sessions. Most pools request that outdoor shoes are removed on entry, so bring a pair of flip-flops if you don't want to get your feet wet!

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

You can find details on the latest fees here. We normally ask for payment at the beginning of each course, with payment preferred by cheque if possible.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE MONEY?

The money raised from teaching and other club activities is carefully managed by the club's treasurer, and used to continue the good work of the club. A big portion of the money is used to pay for pool time, and other essential expenses.

MY CHILD IS QUITE SHY AND/OR SCARED - CAN YOU STILL HELP?

Be reassured that your child is almost certainly not the only one who feels like this. We make it our job to welcome children, making sure they don't feel left out or frightened. Please feel free to discuss any concerns or worries with one of our instructors.

HOW DO I GET STARTED?

The first thing to remember is that we are a friendly and welcoming bunch and always welcome new people! To find out when the next set of lessons begin you can email us or give us a call. Contact details can be found in our Contact Us section.
